Winter event and rants

December 15th, 2006 at 01:50 am

Our office had its - holiday party aka the winter event. Two good pieces of news:

1. Happened today. When we got the afternoon off (by tradition), most of us got home before the brutal wind and rain storm. I didn't quite make it home before the beginning - had gym class for an hour, so when I got out at 3pm, it was Venus murky with the rain coming down in sheets.

2. We are getting a 2% raise, starting in January 2007. Don't call me ungrateful, I love it, its much better than a bonus (a raise is forever), but...

Could it have come from a pro-active assessment, rather than a reactive one (smart, confident people slamming our office during exit interviews)? Wait a minute...what am I saying? What company ever does this?

Guys, if any of you are watching the Thursday night football game on the NFL network, I want you to remember that Seattle is always like this. Always. You don't want to be here. We never see the sun, we're never dry. Mountains? What are those? We never saw them until the satellite pictures clearly showed them. Smile

And finally, to the junk mail industry: I nearly caught pnuemonia sprinting out in the sheets of rain to get the mail in the mailbox. What was in the mail? Crap.

Saving log - 1$
Spending log - 1$. Our banquet table had a bet as to who would win our main award. I didn't win. I won due to the fact that it kept me distracted enough to have just one dinner roll while we were waiting for lunch.

    congrats on your pay raise!

a philosophical thought, if pay raise is below inflation, is it really a raise?

Now, now, Baselle. Did you forget our very unusual upwards of 80 degree summer when some of us (well, me anyway) forgot rain even existed? It is sure making up for it now. Got caught in the rain 3 times today when we were pricing generators. The wind didn't start until 9 tonight though. Sounds like a train rushing through the valley. It is supposed to snow here tomorrow afternnoon/night. They're talking about 18 inches. No fair, we just finally had the last of it melting away. Oh, well, at least DH is home this time.

jersey jen - yep, its a raise, because you are making more than you were before so you are losing less to inflation than you were before. But I know what you mean! I can save more than I get from a raise.

lucky robin - I'm waiting for a couple of trees to crash down here. We already have a fatality down here in Seattle. A woman was in her basement utility room when water came crashing through, filling up the room and the basement so fast that she couldn't escape. She drowned.

Oh, how horrible. We had a tree come down in town that lifted someone's car up by the rootball, so its several feet off the ground. Fortunately the people had gotten out of the car when it happened. There was a photo in the paper. The firemen couldn't do anything because it was on private property and the owner of the rental unit was out of town. Tonight they are trying to fish someone out of the Nooksack River and its really swollen huge.
