where the houseboats were

July 13th, 2008 at 06:25 am

Walked on Fairview, instead of Eastlake, this afternoon for my walk, up again to the U district, finishing at Trader Joes.

Part of the walk was at the water line and was very nice. The part of Fairview where the houseboats were was unexpectedly not nice. Lots of Private Property, no Photography signs...not unexpected. But the road itself was broken up and dirty, cars all sticking out & lots of liquor bottles & beer cans strewn around. Surprising for supposed "worth" of the properties.

Bought a bottle of water for $1.19. Bad girl!

I looked at a For Sale sign (it was so tempting to photograph it Big Grin). Catty, snarky note here: if you are trying to sell a 1M houseboat, it might help to learn to spell (where is the Space Needel anyway?) and don't use serial killer/ransom note handwriting. The seller really would have done better with cutting and gluing letters from the newspaper.

Finished off by getting 32 clif bars at Trader Joe's for week day breakfast use. Still holding at .99/apiece.

How in the world can they get away with a sign that says "No photographing?" As far as i know, that's not something you can mandate! Yeah, the homeowners want their privacy, but if you live in houseboats on the water, other people enjoy the view as much as you and i don't think you can "own" a view.

My DD9 just finishead reading Emily Windsnap - a book about a girl who is part mermaid. The author lived on a houseboat on a canal in rural England. The other day for fun we priced English houseboats for canal living (like that would ever happen because we would need three or four of the ones we were looking at). Sounds intersting though - big houseboats? that expensive docked in an awful place? bad ...

Oh hey I went to Trader Joe's (that very one) earlier in the day. Brioche, sprouted grain bread, yogurt, alphabet pasta, chocolate milk, orange juice... so so glad I finally visited -- saving so much more than at the PetroChemicals High Fructose Corn Syrup Emporium near me, even with the gas spent driving to TJ (incorporated other errands, had boy with me).

lol lol lol - robert teriyaki!!!! (those names all sound alike anyway Big Grin) I think I know that Petro Chemical High Fructose Corn Syrup Emporium - if its near you, its probably fairly near me also. I feel so...pwned.

fern & boomeyers - I still might get a picture of that sign. Not like the houseboat's going to sell and the sign's going down.

N.B.: chatted with DH about it. (He came to Seattle in 1972, while I came in 1985). He told me that in the 70's, the houseboat was the last resort, the place you got if you couldn't get an apartment somewhere. All you had to do then was buy something that floated and pay for moreage. You didn't pay much in taxes; city services were pretty thin; the view you wanted was out in the water rather than back on dry land. Houseboats, in other words, were Seattle's version of the mullet: business in the front, party in the back.

When I was out in CA visiting my grandma this past May we went to Trader Joe's. I was very impressed with their prices - especially in comparison with Whole Foods.

Have you checked prices for the Cliff bars on amazon? I'm not sure if they'd be a better deal or not - but I have seen them in the grocery section.

I'll have to check amazon out. So far the low prices in Seattle have been .99/Clif bar and $1/Odwalla bar.

You know, I've always wondered if it's actually affordable to live in a house boat? I mean, I'm not really a salty type, but I'm adventurous enough to try anything once if it save me $$$. Big Grin

Something tells me it'd probably be more hassle than just renting some apartment somewhere.

BA - you can save on water/sewer if you pee out the side and don't have to flush. Big Grin And an apartment just doesn't have that Tom Hanks/Sleepless in Seattle romantic vibe going. But if you get motion sick or have big pets or like a big garden ... you've got issues.
