the good, the weird, and the awful

Saving log - $1 tip box
Spending log - $8 lunch + $20 groceries

Good
Found a good deal on Odwalla bars at Uwajimaya - I eat them for breakfast - .99/each. Usually they go for $1.39 - $1.69. At best lately they go for 10/$10, which is $1/each.

Weird
I was shocked to see a big bin of

Text is jujubes and Link is http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jujube
jujubes . Somehow I missed the memo that they exist as a real fruit. I just thought it was a cutesy name for a piece of candy. FYI - they appear to be in season right now.

Awful
On a darker note, we were alerted that our health insurance is going up. A lot. If HR continued with the old carrier - premiums would have gone up 41%. Now they are "merely" going up 30%.

I thought jujubes were candy too! Thanks for the link!

I also thought only of the candy. We tease my son about them because when he was younger he thought they were called Jub-jubs. He did not know how to pronounce Jujubes and kept adding in the extra b. I will have to tell him that they are really a fruit. Thanks for the link cause I doubt he will believe me without me showing it to him.

Ugh, to the awful! Mine went up 40% the year I turned 30. I am bracing myself for 35. (I used to brace myself for age 40 and figured dh may work by then, but they changed the rate structure the year we hit 30 - lucky us - and now change your rates drastically in 5 year increments).

The only nice thing is the base our rates based on the youngest adult for whatever reason. I need to dump dh and marry a 20-year-old. LOL. He is one year older than I but we got a one year grace for that reason.

30% doesn't sounds much better than 40%. Yuck.

baselle - Do you know someone who has a Costco membership? If so, you might want to ask them to check on Odwalla bars for you. I recently bought 2 boxes there for ~$9 ($8.89?) for a box of 18 ... the downside being that you can't choose your assortment. Then again, I think they had an asterik by the price which I think means they are being discontinued by Costco, so it may have been a "clearance" price. Still, might be worthing looking in to if you eat them regularly.

scfr - I'll have to check to see if our Costco has that deal. I'm not picky about the assortment, although the super protein ones hang around a bit longer than the rest of them.

And its funny - with the fire generated with stocks whooshing down and up, no one in our office is talking about the REAL bad news.

I think you solved a mystery for me! My Afghani and Pakistani friends have served me what I think must be dried jubjubes in a mix of dried fruits and nuts. They did not know what to call them in English. Now I can ask them, "Are these annab(Persian)/ ennab (Urdu)?"

I've been wondering about what our health insurance is going to be for 2009. I should be getting my benefits package from work in about a week or two.
