I got a Rhoomba for my birthday. Its fun to watch. Compared the regular vacuum its a bit quieter - and if I don't have to vacuum, that's fine with me.

Noticed that the I-bond fixed rate is at 0.10% with a zero percent variable. The first I-bonds that I bought are now approaching 5 years old, come August I start to have some that will not have the 3 month interest penalty.

The May Day protest parade right at rush hour marched past our office on 2nd. Nice and loud and went on for a good 20 minutes. We never ever get a parade - its usually 1st or 3rd Avenue that gets it.

Ate a couple of cups of lettuce thinnings - very tasty, but its growing faster than I can eat. DJ friend offered to water our containers while we're away. Hope he takes our offer of eating what he can, too. Up for this weekend is to finally pot up the tomato plants we got when we got our blueberry plants. The blueberry plants are getting itty-bitty cup shaped flowers. Not too many, but some.

Tonight I also saw my first flu masked person out on the street. An older woman. Not sure whether I should be blase about it, treat it with respect, or even try to get it (get sick and build your immunity early). The last flu pandemic I knew about was the Hong Kong Flu in 1968. I remember my parents talk about it in hushed tones, and the seeing the pictures of it in the paper. I was 6.

Reminds me my sister got chicken pox when I was a teen and I made sure to get it (shared her drinking cup?). I was glad - it was awful (since I was older), but at least I didn't have to worry about that when I was an adult or pregnant!!! Of course NOW they have a vaccine. It has the distinction of the only disease I ever willingly tried to get. LOL.

I could see getting the flu before it mutates more - though hadn't thought of it. Hmmmm...

So does the rhoomba really work?

A trick to eat a lot of lettuce is to make "wilted lettuce salad". Pan wilting it makes the volume go way down. There is actually more lettuce in a serving of wilted lettuce salad than cold lettuce salad. Most recipes call for pieces of bacon and even bacon grease in the pan to wilt it, but any oil will do. Most essentially I just use vinegar, oil, and a bit of sugar (or actually these days I use Splenda.)

Wish I could grow blueberries here. Soil is too alkaline to do it without constantly adding a soil acidifier. Frown

monkeymama - DH has run the rhoomba every day until the battery goes (about an hour), and has cleaned out the little container afterwards. Tons and tons of lint and pet hair undercoat every time. I say it works pretty well - if nothing else, its more patent than I am and probably moves over an area more slowly. I vacuum pretty fast because I hate it so.

joan - I'll keep you up on how the blueberries are doing in the containers, where you can control the soil. I got the advice that blueberries do fairly well in pots because they are shallow rooted (I also went small for that reason) - however they love "wet feet" which means mulch and watering every day. Fingers crossed!

i've only planted five lettuce seeds at the moment - even if only one germinates that will be fine with me! once i see a seedling sprout, i will plant a couple more, and so on, hopefully i will get a lettuce every week! i was worried about planting lots of them, because we only eat about a lettuce a week (just the two of us). so i think having grown them we would eat more, but probably only up to two a week. i plan to give a couple away. Smile
