week 4

April 21st, 2013 at 12:52 am

Cabinets are in. Because I have an undermount sink and a slide in stove, the appliances need to be here so the contractor can make sure the appliance/countertops are installed with no issues. Also the ceiling lights will show next week. And the dust curtain is gone.

I got the revised bill, and so far the extra flooring and slight shift in plumbing only added $1.2K. I know, I know, in the frugal twilight zone where $1.2K is a dodged bullet and not a disaster.

Looking forward to seeing your new kitchen - all in. Was it difficult to choose sink, faucet, countertop, door pulls etc? What do you do with all the stuff taken out of the kitchen meanwhile? How will you designate new space? Do you promise to just return those items that you actually use and that serve your needs? Excited for you and realize that kitchen upgrades add value to your home easily recoverable some day in the future when you sell.

snafu - some of those decisions were surprisingly difficult because I made them over time (to avoid decision fatigue) so I'm still not out of the woods yet whether everything I picked out plays nice with each other. But I aimed for smooth, contemporary, honest storage, pick one finish and keep it, and right sized for a condo kitchen - nothing 'toy' but nothing grandiose either. The contractors (who have in it for a long time) have been helpful in the x means y means z, so start here at x.

The nicest thing about the uppers is that the shelves are adjustable. Yeah! It means that I can store tall condiment bottles and can make a narrow shelf for an impromptu wine rack. I promised myself that the kitchen will not be a big junk drawer, but the open storage really forces you to keep things tidy. And key to tidy is 'just enough'.

My stuff is in boxes in the second bedroom. I currently don't have that all that much and I know that my weakness is kitchen gadgets. I definitely avoid those stores and don't stay long in them if I need an item (I keep it to one item). If you are talking about the old cabinets - the contractor donated them to re-use places so they've assured me very little of the old kitchen went to the dump.

I'm excited about the upgrades - I believe that I got a good deal on the whole condo simply because there was no dishwasher (rectifying that! Big Grin) - but I am especially happy because I'm using the upgrade first.
