article about not driving/not buying gas being a patriotic act. I've been mentioning it for years even in supposedly green Seattle and people have looked at me as if I was nuts. Finally, not nuts!

I can understand it if you were out in the boonies. Lugging groceries for miles up a hill is absolutely no fun, but in the city a car is a tool. You don't want to shoot a squirrel with a machine gun; why use a car for every batch of light errands?

Good article. I love the idea of buying a scooter with about 75 miles per gallon because most of my driving is local these days, but then I wonder about the costs of insuring a vehicle I can only use half the year.

I live outside the city limits. I drive about 7 miles to work every day, plus taking DGS to school, church, etc. I work with a woman who doesn't own a car. She gets lifts with people and takes a taxi. We don't have good public transportaion in our town. She live in town though.
My daughter lives in Austin and she takes the shuttle to work everyday.
It's just not practical for me. But, I am still driving my 2003 paid for Dodge Stratus and get 25 miles to the gallon.

Yeah--the trade deficit issue really makes sense. I've really resolved to car pool more with co-workers.

ylibrarylady - very much understand if one doesn't have reasonable public transit, but if one does - why is one considered a loser if one takes public transit instead of a patriot? And if you give that woman a lift, thank you! Big Grin
