yikes at the grocery store

Saving log - $0 tip box
Spending log - $1.19 coffee +$17 lunch

So much for the 3 free lunches. I just caught up on this one.

Yesterday I discovered that I had no tomato sauce for the pasta sauce, so I made do last night with chopped tomatoes, tomato paste, and a bit of vinegar and water. Every so often, though, I need tomato sauce.

Here's where the price book gets depressing - the best price I saw was .95/14 oz can. Back in 2004 sauce was .33 - .44/can.

Then I checked out the pasta
2008 - $2.38/16 oz bag
mid 2007 - $1.50/16 oz bag
2005 - .69/16 oz bag
2004 - .67/16 oz bag

All I can say to that is WOW! You can tell it is happening, but to see the actual amounts is WOW!

Wow! That is quite the upswing on the price of pasta! The one I've really noticed is the price of apples -- it used to be that I could get 5 for $1.00 -- now it's more like 2, or *sometimes* 3 for a dollar.

Occasionally I'll remember random little snippets that I read on blogs. From yours, I remember an entry a few (?) years ago wherein you spoke of how much interest your ING account was earning, and you said something to the effect of, "Now I can buy a small cup of coffee every day for the rest of my natural life."

After I read that it became a goal for me--to earn enough interest money to conceivably pay for a daily coffee. I was so happy when I started earning more interest than that (moving into "venti latte" territory and beyond, you could say). Of course, these days I'm back down below daily-small-coffee. Sigh...

Anyway, I wondered if you remembered that. I'm sure you could buy yourself a lot more coffee these days! Smile
Oh, and to answer your question on my blog--Broadview!

So it's not just milk, eggs, fruits & veggies going up, the "pantry staples" are too... depressing indeed!
