Saving log - $0
Spending log - $3.88 coffee, bagel
Found money - $0.41 (11 pennies - road, sidewalk; 3 dimes - 1 in a gutter, 2 in 2 different sidewalk tree planting squares)

I read jaw dropping statistics about food stamps in an

article in the paper today:

1 in 8 Americans currently on them
1 in 4 US children fed by them
1/2 of all Americans have been on them at one time or another
90% of black Americans have been on them at one time or another.

I have never been, but I've come mighty close to it.

If these stats are accurate, then at least 7/8 (possibly more) of people who went on food stamps found a way to get off of them. Sounds like a safety net that may be working pretty well...

I know I am surrounded by middle class society. But those numbers are a reminder of how big poverty actually is- even in America.

36% of all people in my county are on foodstamps, and 62% of all children! Thank goodness for foodstamps, unemployment benefits, TANF, social security, and SS disability, stc., especially in this time of high unemployment. We'd all be in a bigger mess without these programs.

I was on food stamps for less than a year. This was years and years ago when husband was laid off and I only could find part time work.

The people at the post office were very nasty about issuing stamps, but by golly the budget was incredible. I remember being ashamed for having them, but grateful for the amount of food I was able to buy (and being me stockpile), and how proud I was to get off them. I also learned to use household products for cleaning.

Fortunately, the store where I got groceries was kind and never gave me at attitude that I remember, but I do remember the sense of tremendous shame.
