lunchtime conversation

October 27th, 2011 at 04:56 am

I had a nice lunch time conversation with several temp staff helping our non-profit fundraise. I learned the loss leaders for a six or seven different grocery stores, and everybody knew that all the weekly specials changed on Wednesday. Lately I've been eating an avocado for lunch; found out that they were 88 cents each.

I've been keeping up with the tip box and have been still finding change. I'm again not feeling the urge to put on a costume this Halloween, but there are going to be a couple of potlucks for it - I can be festive in that way.

I find that funny because our temps are always recent college grads (young) with brand new Priuses and designer clothing and accessories, and starbucks every day. Literally. Every single one of them drives a Prius. (They particularly stand out with us old/conservative accountants - we all have really old cars, for one).

We haven't hired a temp in a year or so, though.

Having started my career in a very high cost area, I am used to younger people pinching pennies just to afford rent. Who can afford a new car??? So it's very much a culture shock for me.

Most of our temp staffers are older - we tend to want to pick them to reflect the demographics of the employees of the workplace. The sweet spot for us is a staffer in their 30s. To the young bucks at companies they look like they might be hip, to the older farts they look serious.

About 5 years ago we had a wave of accounting staffers who drove new cars, etc. Mutual culture shock - officially DH and I share a car, but I hate driving - me with no car, 20-something with new car. Right now we all are cheap-ass ol' birds. Big Grin
