do I look like I have a dollar?

October 6th, 2008 at 05:39 am

Saving log - $1 tip box
Spending log - $3.26 bagel, coffee + $1.75 decaf coffee

Stopped by the office yesterday to pick up my dirty gym clothes, after the night ride I washed and dried them. Today I delivered them back to the office, then I walked the 7 miles home.

Odd ball observation on the way home: I had a woman ask me for a dollar as I crossed a street downtown. That wasn't so odd. It was odd because she was well dressed, relatively stylish combo of pants and heels and not in jeans. She appeared to be walking with another woman, also stylish. I was dressed in my running tights and track jacket. Why did she ask me for a dollar? Why did she need a dollar from me? If she got caught short she looked like she had plastic...or did. And just a dollar. Was she breaking the ice - or practicing depression-era skills just for me?

I got asked for change a couple of more times, each from expected sources. In that aspect, the world was righted again.

On the way home I found a dime on the ground and got a free coffee card.

I sometimes dress like a bum and get hit up for money anyway. I must not have the crystal meth glaze in my eyes. Last year two decently dressed men asked me for money to fuel their cars, one asking me as I was walking. Now I see people begging for money on a Saturday night outside the drugstore. In a residential area.

I always get hit up for money, but never by anyone dressed expectionally nice. It doesn't matter how I'm dressed ... I have had people follow me out to my car from stores. SCARY!

I also got asked for money for gas one time from a man at a gas station. I knew he was out of gas since I had seen people push his van into the station, but he said he was from St Pete (which is a good hour away). I don't know why you would drive all the way over here across a long bridge over water if there was a chance you would run out of gas.
