I guess we'll find out

April 6th, 2011 at 06:24 am

DH works Customer Service for the IRS, which last I checked was part of the Federal Government. He expects that he will not be working next Monday if the government shuts down. No word at all about it, or at least no word that he told me. The IRS is very busy - no quiet time as you can well imagine.

But I wonder, if state and Federal taxes are due on the 18th, is his function "essential"? I guess we will find out.

I would guess that I, as a taxpayer, would still be required to pay any taxes due by 4/18. However, staff, like your DH, would not get around to processing my return until the budget mess gets resolved and/or another temporary funding bill is passed.

It's annoying. This lack of ability to fund the government since September!! I hope it is resolved soon.

My son is an economist for the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Looks like he will be getting an unpaid vacation!

The Key word is essential, I am in the same boat. I know I report to work this Monday no matter what (I just dont get a paycheck until the budget is passed).
If there is no budget though my drill weekend this weekend gets cancelled (non-essential).

Also my BF finally learned he falls under non-essential yesterday, so he is nopay/nowork.

I wish you luck that your hubby falls under essential. I would hope the IRS would fall under essential since there is a deadline for people to get their tax returns in.

Yes, the IRS is essential. I have already been getting notices that they are WEEKS behind schedule. It will regularly take them 2-3 months to respond to an inquiry or issue, but have never gotten notes before that "We are busy and will look at this in 3 months." I have been getting those notes for clients. I got this letter full of excuses why they were so busy - I thought it was kind of funny. To me they have always been this way just no apologies before. Wink
Likewise, when California does furloughs there is no rhyme and reason. They literally shut down all the tax agencies one day every week (FTB, EDD, BOE - the state IRS equivalents). Doh! I am sure the Feds will do the same. It wouldn't occur to them that maybe the tax collectors should be open every day while the budget is tight. Wink Since it is April, they may realize the IRS is in extra busy mode. But I'd argue the IRS is essential year-round. People do pay taxes year-round. IRS collects payroll taxes, etc., too.
