the next issue

November 10th, 2011 at 04:40 am

I got a note from my credit union yesterday. They are moving their neighborhood banking center and ATM from the Safeway. Now I normally don't care much about the banking center - I use direct deposit and another banking center downtown is what I use for snafus - but I'm not very happy about the ATMs going.

Oh, and every time I think "I should get a financial planner", well, karma delivers the reason

why. Geez, I think I can screw up by myself and for free.

Thanks for the link to the article. It's an interesting read.
I don't really think he really gets it and I can't believe he got a book out.

I was thrilled for me until I learned there'd be no credit union for over a mile in radius, and I felt sorry for you. But you guys have decent used bookstores and a chic-retro French bistro.

Even better - I have several Merrill Lynch type broker clients who are TERRIBLE with money. When I cite reasons not to use a financial advisor, I am not usually even thinking of them. But, they were getting million-dollar bonuses while ML was getting bailed out. Literally.

I respect this guy. He was honest. & he has waken up while I watch several who are in utter denial about their absolutely impossible situation. (One of these guys has an interest-only loan on home and can't live within means on $500k salary + $1 mil bonus). But yeah - not the type person I would trust with my money, all the same. I've often said that the thing that kept us out of this type mess was primarily common sense. Like, how hard would it have been to get caught up as we watched all our friends by $600k shacks? When we were 22 and didn't know anything??? I just expect more common sense from a financial planner. I Was able to eek out more common sense as a 22-year-old. Apparently that's just you and me. & I am personally not as willing to give the masses a pass for not using their brains.

@Paulette: the move brings my 2 credit unions closer to each other (Verity where I have been for almost 30 years and BECU where I just joined because they were in our Safeway). I just hope the 2 cash machines (that is local vernacular for ATM) stay; amazingly, one will have a line of people and the other will not be in use - it is like they are in 2 different neighborhoods in the Safeway.

    But I digress...

@GrimJack, I read on the PhinneyWood blog that the cash machine will not stay at Safeway. We can walk to Salal Credit Union and use its cash machine, so we don't need BECU where we are, but it's awfully convenient for us.

BECU claims they're moving out because they've become too large for Safeway. After a record number of new accounts, and seeing the lobby area seating always full when I visit my nearest Express Center which until next month I drive to, I believe their claim of growth pain.

Balderdash Books is leaving also. Frown. Not until June though.

If the ATM goes, and the new ATM will not accept BECU w/o a fee (worst case scenario) I will muddle through. I have direct deposit, I generally go to the downtown branch if something's up, and I'll just buy something at the Safeway to get ready cash w/o a fee....until, of course, I can't.

If I can't, its a Death in the Afternoon at Gainsbourgh. Got it all planned out.

monkey mama - I have to admit that at least he's honest. It probably doesn't balance the fact that he was likely totally insufferable during the housing bubble, but there it is.
