out and about

January 22nd, 2012 at 02:45 am

Hard to believe that grey is such a sweet, sweet color around here. We still have a little bit of snow and plenty of icy water on the lawn and in the driveway, but everywhere else, it was muddy snow, wet roads and downtown, dry sidewalks.

Errand day today: delivered the now-clean gym clothes to the office, did a 3.5 mile walk (first long-ish one since last Sunday), bought bras at Fred Meyer which is now also doing a clearance sale preparing for them to close for renovations, picked up some trash around the house. (We had our recycling bin blow over in the windstorm last night). Cancelled the grout fest scheduled for today - maybe next week when it might be a true fest because I'll have two pieces to grout rather than just one.

Found 17 cents "around" a penny or a nickel at a time.

Oh, yes, several people had Etta James; a couple of people have Joe Paterno. This year, with more players and the players themselves seem to have done better research ... the game is already interesting right off the bat.

I didn't realize that Etta James had been sick, but I was on the ball with Joe Pa. And I'm still rueing the fact that I missed Gary Carter. One of the players had him and that looks like it'll pan out. Only 57 years old. Terrible story...

I was pairing up the contestants to see if any had the size overlap you and I did. My kid comes in and sees the lists and gets offended by one contestant's picks. All I will say on SA is that the person who is now considered "MEAN" by my son does not have any confirmed kills. Wow, who knew this was a PG-rated game? "Now honey this is not like sticking pins in voodoo dolls..."

Whenever my kids hear on the news that somebody died, they come running in to ask me if I had them on my list! I guess the fruit doesn't fall far from the tree. Perhaps next year they'll have to pony up $20 and turn in their own list!

Check out the index tab in the excel sheet to make things easier and check for those overlaps.

Paulette, when we went through the lists, you warned me about that "MEAN"nie. I have to say that the voodoo aspect is easier if you pick villians, celebs with a dark sense of humor, or celebs that you figure make bets like this. Stephen Hawking, for instance, made a lot of famous bets with other physicists and would understand this game. Wouldn't surprise me if he played and put himself on the list.

If the game gets much bigger with more astute players, I think I'll be adding a 3-strikes clause. A celeb can be picked by three people; the fourth person has to pick someone else. I think it will encourage people to get their lists in quickly, get more celebs in, and tweak the strategy a little bit. Smile

@baselle One dead pool operator did a draft: we had about 280 picks among the fourteen of us, no duplicates, and although my submitted draft was 56-people long, I think my last pick that year was at #27 on my list. He also had a NYE party so we could help with the draft. As for my kid, he's not against the idea of a Dead Pool: he laughed at seeing Lady Gaga on someone's list.

Point taken about adding villains: I didn't choose nogoodniks, ironically because I wanted a winning list of "oh! why didn't I pick her?" unique types and I was all about the points. This year, impressed by the depth of field and breadth of knowledge, I might just start reading _The Economist_ and listening to BBC World News Service.
