question of the afternoon

March 31st, 2012 at 03:30 am

Didja buy a Mega Millions ticket?

I did. Just one. First lottery ticket I've bought in 30 years. I still debated about it because I was on record for saying, "its a tax on people who don't get probability".

What tipped me to buying it though was, well, I managed to find over $1 in change during the last four days so I could make the case that I bought the ticket with other people's money.

So what would I do with over a quarter billion? Probably what someone in Illinois did: put it in an LLC and keep my name out of the papers.

But what I did buy with the mini-lottery win (aka paycheck) was: rent, groceries, electric bill, and a pledge to my public radio station

Yes, DH bought one, just one. And our chances of winning are something like 176 million to one. Smile But as my 7 year old said, "Someone has to win. I think it will be us."

Looked up the winning numbers. Not a one.

Phooey! Sorry you weren't the big winner!

I don't get what the big deal with buying a lottery ticket or two is? It's fun and a harmless (unless you belong in gambler's anonymous) fantasy.

I agree it's a harmless fantasy! I bought one for myself and then I joined in the office pool -- mostly because I would have really been bummed if everyone else at work won and I didn't! Looks to me like we won a dollar with our joint ticket. (To split 20 ways) Smile

No, because I was in the hospital, but it's so funny: I bought my first Mega Millions ticket ever last week, not even knowing the jackpot was getting so huge! So I take it some numbers matched?

Of course! With a pot the big your "return on investment" would be well worth it! Big Grin

No. I feel like the only person on the planet that does not see the draw of winning a bajillion dollars. Sounds like a headache if you ask me. I will pass...

no - too much hassle to go to the store and fight the other people in line.

Nope, not even sure if NM is part of this particular lottery - probably wouldn't buy one even if we were. But I'm sure my mom bought a few ... Smile I have more than a few ideas of what I'd do with money like that though Big Grin (fund animal shelters, fund school libraries - maybe some kind of grant, set up scholarships for all my relatives kids and a couple of my best friends kids ... buy a new car ...etc.)

We didn't buy one. We were really busy the last few days and even though the thought crossed my mind once or twice, we just don't buy lottery tickets. DH used to get one now and then, but I don't think he has in over 15 years. I think that we would be one of the few couples where if we did win, it really wouldn't change too much in our standard of living, other than to pay off our car, buy a modest house, and go on more vacations. We're too practical to go crazy and we've worked too hard to let money ruin our lives now.
